Tiwa Savage: I Once Ran Away From Home, Suspended A Few Times From School
Nigerian singer, Tiwatope Savage, professionally known as Tiwa Savage, has spoken about her struggles as a child after moving to the United Kingdom.
Savage, who was conferred with an honorary doctorate degree at her alma mater, the University of Kent, on Friday talked about her challenges as an immigrant in the UK while delivering her acceptance speech.
In a video shared by her colleague, Bankulli Osha, via his Instagram page on Friday, Tiwa was seen addressing the audience, dressed in academic robes.
According to her, she faced severe bullying and was suspended from school a few times among other things.
“I failed at a lot of things actually,” she said. “I was bullied at school severely when I moved to the UK, I ran away from home a few times, I was suspended a few times from school.”
Indirectly referencing her sex tape scandal, the songstress said, “I’ve been globally ridiculed a couple of times, I’m not going to say what it is but it rhymes with ‘cape’. The irony.
“I also failed Principles of Finance at this very university when I was graduating.”
She noted that despite the struggles, she has succeeded in becoming a “leading figure” in Afrobeats.
The mother of one also stated that while some call her queen, she is to be referred to as “Dr Savage from now on”.
Savage earlier bagged an Accounting degree from Kent. She is also a graduate of the Berklee College of Music, Boston, Massachusetts.
